Monday was a roller-coaster-weather day. When the sun wasn’t shining and warm, it was cold, cloudy, raining, sleeting or snowing.

The sakura cherry blossoms were only at about 20% open on Monday. But it was still a beautiful day to be out doing hanami even with the crazy weather.

The sky was bright blue. The clouds were mostly white with patches of gray and dark gray-blue. The contrast between the clouds and the sky made for some good photography.

By Thursday, the sakura blossoms should be around 50% opened. But the weatherman said it might rain that day. If so, take an umbrella or rain jacket and brave the elements. If you take lots of battery power, you’ll have a good opportunity for some wonderful shots of sakura using your camera flash.

This year, the Kobe Luminarie will be held from December 3rd to 14th, 2009. The area will be open from 6pm to 9:30pm from Monday thru Thursday each week, on Fridays from 6pm to 10pm, Saturdays from 5:30pm to 10pm and on Sunday from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

If you wish to experience the Kobe Luminarie, it is best to take the train. Traveling there by car will take much more time out of your day because of heavy traffic. Also, if you visit the area earlier in the month, you will experience less foot traffic, as the event goes on more and more people gather to enjoy it. But if you like crowds, then later in the month is for you.

To get to the Luminarie take the Hanshin Railway line to any of the stations between Motomachi and Sannomiya stations.

NOTE: Illumination area times may change due to weather changes.

Sports Day for many schools is on a Saturday in September or October. It is a day set aside once a year when students, faculty and families come together at school to dance, run races and enjoy time together. Most schools have to Sports Days. One is for students only, where families come and watch their children perform, run and do games. The other is for students and families to enjoy doing races, obstacle courses and games together. They are usually one or two weeks apart.

At either Sports Day, parents and family members come to the event early in the morning and lay down little picnic mats and chairs to mark off their spots. It’s dog eat dog on Sports Day! If families come late, most of the best spots are taken and finding a good view of the events becomes difficult.

During Sports Day events, hundreds of people with digital still and video cameras line the outer perimeter of the chalked dirt track as they sit or stand positioned to get their best shots they can of their children participating in Sports Day.

Sports Day usually starts 8 or 9 in the morning and ends at 1 or 2 in the afternoon with a break for lunch around noontime. Most people either bring their own bento or one is provided by the school, usually ordered and paid for in advance. It’s a long day, but one students, faculty and families look forward to every year!
