Six fires in the shapes of giant kanji characters and Japanese motifs are lit on select mountains around the Kyoto City basin; the “dai” character on Mt. Daimonji near Ginkakuji, “myo” and “ho”, which make up the word “Myo-ho”, on Matsugasaki Nishiyama and Higashiyama, and simultaneously lit to another “dai” kanji on Mt. Hidari-Daimonjiyama at Kinkakuji Okitayama, the funa-gata motif on Mt. Funayama, and the torii-gata motif on Mt. Manadarayama. These fires are collectively called “Daimonji Gozan Okuribi.”
People come from all over Japan to witness the famous summer event at the end of Obon holiday period.
