Big Changes in the Japanese Immigration System in 2012

A city hall official in Kyoto stated that in June or July of this year a major overhaul of the foreigner registry system will take place.

Some of the changes that will most likely occur:

The current gaijin card will be changed to a new version.
Foreigners who have been living in Japan for a long period of time will begin receiving permanent residency status. He was unsure of the base number of years; 7 years or maybe fewer.
3-year length of stay changed to 5 years

Foreign Residents Potluck Party

The Minoh Association for Global Awareness will hold a potluck party for foreign residents of Minoh City on December 12, from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at Minoh City Hall’s Toyokawa Branch.

The event is open to foreign residents and their family and friends. Attendees need to bring food or drinks.

Gion Festival Float Tour

On July 13th from 2:30 to 6:30 pm up to 20 non-Japanese residents are invited to see how to build two Gion Festival floats – Kikusui Boko and Kita Kannon Yama – decorated with beautiful tapestries.

Admission is free.

Participants will meet at the Karasuma-Oike subway station in Kyoto City.

Counseling for Foreigners

On December 7th, Kyoto International House in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto will hold a free counseling service on legal matters, visas, social insurance, labor, health and taxes. Interpretation assistance in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese and Thai will be available.

Consultations will be from 1pm to 5pm.
