Typhoon 18 Causes Flooding in Kyoto

The latest typhoon to hit Japan has wreaked havoc on Kyoto causing millions of dollars in water damage. Residents and business owners in areas nearby canals and rivers are having to pump water from their buildings. Most of those feeling the brunt of the storm are in low lying areas near the three major rivers: Kizugawa, Ujigawa and Katsuragawa.

If you are planning to travel around Kyoto this week, you’ll be better off traveling by train. Trains are still running in most areas, but those driving cars are experiencing heavy traffic conditions due to flooded roads.

NOTE: Take caution wherever you go especially along steep mountainsides. Some landslides have been reported throughout the Kansai area.

Major Storm Hitting the Kansai Area

A major storm is currently going through the heart of the Kansai region. Non-stop lightning and torrential rain are striking Osaka and Kyoto cities.

Flooding is occurring from some of the heaviest downpours I have ever seen. Lightning strikes of about 1 per every 2 seconds are popping all around.

A large typhoon is making its way onto land in Japan and is expected to bring heavy rain and winds to the Kansai region later this afternoon and into the night.

Schools in Osaka are letting children out early today, while schools in Kyoto are still in session.

A warning over the loud speaker system here in Kyoto just came on a few minutes ago warning people that there will be heavy rain and high winds later on around 7pm as the typhoon begins to hit Kyoto.

Right now, current conditions in Kyoto are calm with little to no wind. It’s kinda like the calm before the storm.

Typhoon 15 Wreaking Havoc

Typhoon 15 is ashore along the Wakayama and Mie prefectures bringing heavy rain and winds. Warnings and school closings are in effect for much of Nara, Wakayama, Osaka, Kyoto, Shiga and Mie prefectures.

Double Typhoon Trouble

Japan is still getting over typhoon 12 that hit the mainland a few weeks ago and now two typhoons, 15 and 16, are just off the coast sending heavy rain.

Typhoon 16 doesn’t look to reach mainland Japan, but typhoon 15 is hovering south near Okinawa and hasn’t really made up its mind where it’s going yet.

The current possible tracking route is saying the typhoon will pass slightly over the east coast of the Kansai region and along the coastline. If that is the case, everyone that experienced typhoon 12 will most likely have more rain, mud and landslides and flooding to deal with.

Currently, it is raining in the Kansai area off and on, hot and muggy.

Typhoon 12 Hitting the Kansai Region Now

This typhoon has been moving very slowly. First reports said the typhoon would reach the mainland of Japan yesterday, then it was changed to 3am this morning. But when it finally reached the Shikoku, it was 10am.

The typhoon has slowed down tremendously compared to when it was out over the ocean south of Okinawa. It is bringing lots of rain and wind.

Many areas near rivers and valleys are experiencing flooding. So far, there are no reports of mudslides, but the storm is expected to continue hitting the mainland of Japan for the next few days at the rate it is currently moving.

2 people have died so far from this typhoon; one is a surfer.
